What the people at Genesis Place affectionately refer to as a "Code Brown" forced the closure of the facility's leisure pool earlier today (January 18).

Those of you who don't know what that is, have obviously never had kids.

Pool Manager Brad Anderson explains what happens next after the dastardly deed is done.  "When we have one of thes incidents we follow Alberta Health Services protocol so that means cleaning up the contamination and then we have to make sure that we get the chlorine levels back to an acceptable range so that we can make sure that the people that are utilizing the pool are safe and are provided with a clean pool environment."

Anderson says the closure is expected to last around a day.  "It depends on the type of contamination and the body of water that it occurs within, but, in this case it will be about a 24 hour closure of the pool so we can adjust the pool chemicals and get it back to being safe and clean for our users."

Anderson's best guess of when the pool will reopen is around 1:00 pm tomorrow.

Fortunately, according to Anderson, an incident of this type don't happen very often.

"The last time we had this type of contamination was actually back in the fall of 2017, so it's been about a year and a half.  We have minor contaminations all the time, whether a kid swallows a bit too much water and ends up being sick but this type of contamination isn't very frequent.  Our staff is pretty diligent about asking little swimmers to put covers on and we have signage in place and our lifeguards educate our guests about healthy waters and how they can help us keep our pool clean."

The Genesis Place lane pool, Jive Dive tank, and the hot tub remain open.
