An emergency debate was called in the Alberta Legislature on Monday, November 21.

The Wildrose Party called the meeting to address the alarming number of children dying in government care.

"Nothing in the system has changed, nobody is talking about this and nobody is doing anything." said Angela Pitt, Airdrie Wildrose MLA.

Reports from the Office of the Child and Youth Advocate Alberta (OCYA) brought the subject to light. The OCYA shares investigative reports following the death of children in care.

When a report is made, it comes with recommendations for the government. In November alone, the OCYA has already shared 4 investigative reports.

"The problem is these recommendations have been made over, and over, and over again, and they just fall on deaf ears." said Pitt.

One of the major subjects addressed in the debate is the role poverty plays in many of these cases, particularly the deaths of aboriginal youth.

A full list of investigative reports can be found on the OCYA website.
