A great proclamation came out of this week's City Council meeting.

The month of June has been proclaimed as the City of Airdrie's Mental Health and Addictions Awareness Month.

Kim Titus Chair of The Thumbs Up Foundation says the City of Airdrie has made great strides over the past few years to help those with mental health symptoms.

"We do have ongoing and fairly significant mental health and addiction concerns within our community and the more energy, momentum and effort we have around this the easier it becomes for people to get the access they need."

According to Statistic Canada, 10% of the population above the age of 15 years old will face some type of mental health or addictions issue in their lifetime.

"There is a recognition that we are in a tsunami of mental health nationally, I know that the lets talk movement has helped in the last few years there is just more awareness around it generally, people are talking about it more. We still are not there yet but we are definitely moving in the right direction."

Titus says the community has really come together over the last few years with support for those suffering from mental health and addictions whether it be connecting people to the proper resources or supporting initiatives such as The Mental Health Taskforce.

"It's amazing to see people agree to the participate in the mental health task force for our community, speaks volumes for our community.
