It's the day some people have been looking forward to and others have been dreading.

Bill C-45, the law making the use of recreational cannabis legal, goes into effect in Canada today October 17) and just how it's going to work out in Canadian cities depends on who you ask.

If you ask the top politician in Airdrie, Mayor Peter Brown is likely to say, "We'll have to wait and see what that exactly looks like, because we don't know."

Brown does know one thing for sure, and that's where people can, and can't, consume cannabis legally.  "Some of the obvious rules are you can consume in your private residence or designated cannabis consumption site, which is over behind the Co-op at 269 Sierra Springs Drive.  That's going to be here for a one year trial."

Brown says the city's rules don't apply to people living in condominiums or apartments.  "Those rules and regulations are set by those boards, of course."

The list of places where cannabis can be consumed in Airdrie is quite short, according to Brown.  "Cannabis can't be consumed on commercial, industrial, recreational or institutional properties.  Obviously, that's not a private residence."

The mayor says there's somewhere anyone living in the city can go to get more information on cannabis use.  "Go to airdrie.ca/cannabis and we're going to see how all this goes."
