When installing a child car seat for the first time it can be very confusing and even downright maddening.

Without understanding the proper installation procedures, 8 out of 10 car seats are installed incorrectly in Alberta, putting your child at risk.

Constable Jennifer Weedmark with the Airdrie RCMP said that to ensure your child's safety there are a couple of options.

"The Alberta Children's Hospital actually offers a 2 hour class, typically they're held in the evening and they offer them about once a month, and they are free of cost to anybody who wants to go and obtain anymore information on the installation of car seats."

Weedmark did note that the hospital will not check car seat installation first hand due to liability but there are certified technicians who can ensure installation is done correctly.

The Child Passenger Safety Association of Canada has a list of technicians available in Alberta, including Airdrie.
