Airdrie RCMP, the Fire Department and The City of Airdrie have concluded their investigation into Sunday's (February 4) deadly carbon monoxide leak at 700 Willowbrook Road.

"The matter is non-criminal in nature," said Cst. Dan Martin of the RCMP. "They've determined that the cause was due to a ventilation system not operating properly from the water heater."

That led to a build up of carbon monoxide inside the apartment, which proved fatal to a 12 year old boy.

Martin said that the unfortunate tragedy continues to demonstrate the importance of protecting your family at home.

"Moving forward, we want to put out the message as well that everybody should be either purchasing or taking a look at their already installed carbon monoxide detectors as well as smoke alarms. We want to make sure that accidents like this are prevented."

The RCMP, the Fire Department and the City of Airdrie have felt a great deal of sadness for the family of the boy who passed away, but says that the community has supported them overwhelmingly.
