It's National Impaired Driver Awareness Week throughout the country. (March 18th-24th)

Airdrie RCMP and other Police force throughout the country are gearing up for this week. Many towns and cities will see an increase in traffic patrols as well as check stops being conducted through. The City of Airdrie is no exception to that.

Corporal Gary Fedro says that the RCMP are working to make their presence known this week.

"We are looking at setting up some check stops to detect impaired drivers and stop people from taking that avenue of transportation home."

Anyone that is caught driving under the influence could face a loss of their license and a thousand dollar fine for their first offence. It's advised that anyone considering impaired driving call a cab, friend or walk to their destination.

"Make a smart choice, if you do go out and are indulging in alcoholic beverages or even at this point in time, illegal substances make a wise choice".
