With the recent cold weather, many will be idling their cars in an effort to warm up before hitting the road.

Cst. Jennifer Weedmark with the RCMP shares some tips to ensure you are protected from theft and harm while warming your vehicle.

"In order to prevent yourself from being a victim of a property crime when leaving your vehicle idling, there are a few things that you can do. One of the main ones would be, we suggest you look at having an automatic car starter installed so there's no keys in the ignition."

Weedmark also recommends these other tips:

  • Have two sets of keys so your vehicle can be secured while idling
  • Never leave children or pets in a idling vehicle
  • Don't leave valuables in plain sight in an unattended vehicle
  • Park in a ventilated area so exhaust doesn't become an issue
