An initiative that is aimed towards raising awareness for bicycle safety has Olds RCMP, Olds Dairy Queen and Ridley's Cycle for Calgary and Okotoks awarding kids in a unique way.

In Alberta, any youth under the age of 18-years-old must wear a helmet while riding their bicycle.

In order to reinforce this, any youth in Olds seen wearing their helmet while riding their bicycle will be pulled over by an RCMP officer and given a ticket. The catch with this ticket? It must be taken to Dairy Queen and redeemed for a free small cone.

The ticket also has a ballot entry printed on the backside, which will be entered into a draw for a free bike donated by Ridley's Cycle, which will take place on August 19th at the Dairy Queen in Olds.

With the kids being out of school for the summer time, many are found on their bikes, cycling on pathways and around roadways, increasing the potential for an accident to occur.

Olds RCMP is also reminding motorists to share the road with cyclists and to remember that it is everybody's responsibility to stay safe on the roads.
