The Cochrane and Area Humane Society have taken in a stray cat, now named Charlee, on Thursday, August 18, with one of her legs zip tied to the point that it may have to be amputated.

Jaimie Anton, Cochrane and Area Humane Society Fund Development Officer, said they are watching Charlee closely.

"She had one zip tie around her back leg, and that's been removed now. We're monitoring her, the vet is taking really good care of her, we're just making sure she doing OK and we're hoping we can save the leg."

Anton shared one of Charlee's front legs is injured as well and very swollen and the Humane Society is still not sure of what happened to her or whether it's an animal cruelty case.

"We're not sure, certainly most cats don't end up with zip ties around their leg like that randomly out there, but we're not 100% sure what happened there."

Anton explained after reading some Facebook comments on posts about Charlee, she would like people to research the dated laws around animal cruelty.

Bill C-246 was introduced in February to adjust the animal cruelty laws in Canada.

She said the government must be pressed to make those changes.

"Talk to your MP and do a little research behind that bill, and put some pressure on those changes. A lot of people view Canada's animal welfare laws quite outdated, and in that sense and there is a bill in there now that would enact some changes that would make neglect and cruelty charges easier to prosecute."
