The Airdrie Festival of Lights could be lights out this year if they aren't able to convert each light display over to meet the new GFCI electrical code.

Last year the festival updated all the electrical plugs and boxes to meet the new GFCI code but were not able to update any of the light displays.

After a wet snowfall on December 11, the festival went dark for the first time in 20 years due to the new breakers shorting out with any sign of moisture.

Michelle Pirzek, Festival Coordinator said due to the requirements not going into effect until January 1, 2016 the festival was able to back track and put the old plugs back in.

"We went back to the City of Airdrie Inspections and talked to them and said 'what do we do? where do we go from here?'

With an investment of over $30,000, the Festival of Lights now needs to bring their full light display up to code before December 1, 2016.

The campaign, #SavetheLights has been created to get the community involved in stripping displays ranging in size from 3ft to 10ft wide.

Pirzek said anyone can volunteer to help, you don't need to be an electrician.  Families are able to volunteer together and work on the display in their spare time at home, the festival will drop it off along with all the needed supplies to update the display.

Displays will be dropped off during the month of June and must be completed by October 1.

The Festival of Lights will be drawing for a couples package and a family stay-cation package that will be given to one of the families that volunteers.

To help keep the festival glowing, call Michelle Pirzek at (403) 912-XMAS(9627) or email coordinator.afols@gmail.com to arrange a pick up or delivery of a display before June 30.
