Some town homes in Windsong will soon have their garbage and recycling picked up from the back alley instead of the front curb.

Susan Grimm with Airdrie's Waste and Recycling program says this isn't a new occurrence, but changes are usually made based on where the houses garages are located.

"The decision is predominately based on the location of the garage. Where people have a front drive garage, we don't move the collection area...typically people either keep their garbage in or beside their garage."

As part of the process of changing pick up locations, Grimm says the city will take ownership of roads in a community from the developer, two years after the infrastructure is complete.

"Once we issue the final acceptance certificate where we've agreed that everything is fine...then changes to the collections points can occur from front street to the back alley."

In the case of some homes on Windstone Road, their pickups will move to the back alley where the garage is kept.

"Where there is a laneway with maybe a detached garage or no garage, that's where the change will occur."
