A City Bylaw prohibiting school buses from using flashing lights when stopped is still not sitting well with some in the community.

Airdrie's Chris Gourlie is one of those opposed to the bylaw and is hoping it'll be changed.

"We cannot wait for tragedy to happen before we act...It is zero cost to the taxpayers to change the bylaw, to make it safe for students."

The bylaw in question has been around since 1987 and states that a school bus can't use their flashing lights or crossing arms when they've stop to load or unload students on a road.

The city says that marked crosswalks are a safer alternative to the lights, but Gourlie says there's a problem with that.

"The city has said that buses (should) stop at crosswalks. Mot all bus stops in Airdrie are at crosswalks. We still have vehicles passing buses."

Gourlie says he has heard many concerns from parents in areas such as Luxstone and Cooper's Crossing when buses are stopped without a marked crosswalk.
