Over the past few days, the City of Airdrie and all of Canada took time to commemorate Seniors Week.

The initiative started in 1986 as a way to support and honour those in our community who have seen so much in their years.

Across the city, many Seniors Residences hosted events for the week including the Hamlets at Cedarwood Station.

Lifestyles Manager with Cedarwood, Kim Magarvey explains why it's important to pay respect to our Seniors.

"Seniors are the backbone of our community, they are our volunteers. They have worn many hats over the years...in nursing, they've fought in our wars. They are just amazing people "

The Hamlets at Cedarwood hosted a couple events this past week including the "Hats Off To Seniors" Lunch and a Country Fair complete with games, carnival food and a dunk tank.

As important as it is to honour Seniors with their own week, Magarvey says the generosity towards them should go beyond that.

"Realistically, we do things on a daily basis to make our residents feel at home, feel comfort, fell assured within our building. Making them feel like family, taking care of them on their day to day needs."

Margarvey also said that there are plenty of ways to help Seniors in our community, and it doesn't need to be big.

"Just making sure when you're out in public, if you see a Senior, hold the door for them or you know if you see them walking them across the street with bags...offer them a hand, taking that nice gesture to say 'Thank You' and making this community even better than it is."
