Highway Two was closed for close to nine hours starting at 3:00 am this morning.

Shortly after 2:30 am Innisfail RCMP received a call of a jackknifed semi, soon after the number rose from one semi to five.

Highway Two northbound was blocked just north of Bowden due to the crashed semi-trailers.  Northbound traffic was being diverted onto Highway 2A with travellers able to resume driving northbound on Highway 2 at the Cottonwood Road overpass.

It took close to nine hours before the highway was reopened and restored to normal traffic flow.

Extremely icy road conditions were reported and were believed to have contributed to the pileup.

Most of central and southern Alberta is under a snowfall warning and expecting anywhere from 15-25 cms of snow tonight.  These conditions are likely to worsen the already icy conditions.
