When the leaves start to fall three things can be guaranteed, kids are back in school, the temperatures are dropping and farmers are harvesting.

It's important for you to be aware of the increase in farm equipment on highways and rural roads during the harvest.

Alana Julius with Agriculture for Life says it's crucial to have patience during this time.

"For motorists, it's important to keep in mind that farm machinery moves slowly, 30-40 kilometres on average. It's important to slow down for equipment and leave lots of room for them."

It's also recommended that you keep 50 meters back from farm equipment so the operator can see you outside of their blind spots.

"Just because the tractor moves over it doesn't necessarily mean they are moving over for you to pass"

Julius also says safety is everyone's responsibility.

"Farmers need to be conscious of planning their route, making sure they avoid high traffic times, busy roads and night driving as well as obeying all traffic laws."
