A long time City Councillor has announced his intentions to run for a fifth term.

Kelly Hegg has sat on City Council since 2004, and said he plans to run again in the upcoming municipal election because he feels there's still more to do in the community.

"I hopefully can offer a voice of experience. When you look at the things that Airdrie is ready to get going in the next little while, we've started on the path and I guess we need to continue on that path to finish some things up."

Hegg's campaign will revolve around three priorities: Guiding growth, connecting community and offering opportunities.

Hegg explained that, as Airdrie continues to grow at a tremendous rate, growth needs to be managed in a way that reflects the needs and desires of the community. That can be done by listening to the voices of residents. The infrastructure that connects the community will be a focus for Hegg, and he's committed to addressing frustrations with Airdrie's roads and pathways. Hegg also believes it's important to offer opportunities to citizens so they can benefit from the success of the city. That could come from working closely with partners in education or social services.

Hegg also recognized that a new recreational facility and library stand out as issues of need in the community. He said those specific issues need to be addressed, but hopes his campaign will use a broader approach in addressing Airdrie's needs than just drilling down on specific issues.

"I think we want to make sure that our vision is bigger than that. There are some mile posts along the way to get you where you want to go in terms of meeting those needs...we can identify that but we need to look at the big picture as well."

Hegg said if he wins a fifth term on City Council, he's excited to see what they can accomplish for the city.

"I think it would be being able to work with Council, whoever those members are, and again looking at setting those priorities and seeing if we can, again, make Airdrie the best place it can be."
