A heat warning is in effect for areas east of Airdrie, as well as the City of Calgary.

Environment Canada issued the warning on Monday, July 27 at 4:25 a.m.

Areas impacted include Irricana, Beiseker, and Kathryn. The warning extends to other parts of Rocky View County including Chestermere, Dalroy, and Dalemead.

The City of Calgary was added to the warning at 9:34 a.m. The City of Airdrie is not currently under a warning.

"Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion," reads the warning.

Temperatures in the area are expected to reach at least 29C over the next two days. That coupled with overnight lows near 14 degrees prompted the warning to be issued.

Environment Canada offers following precautions for those in the region to protect themselves, their families and their neighbours:

  • Consider rescheduling outdoor activities to cooler hours of the day.
  • Take frequent breaks from the heat, spending time in cooled indoor spaces where possible.
  • Drink plenty of water and other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages to stay hydrated.
  • Check for your children or pets before you exit your vehicle. Do not leave any person or pet inside a closed vehicle, for any length of time.

Symptoms of heat stroke or heat exhaustion include the following:

  • high body temperature
  • lack of sweat
  • confusion
