After receiving several complaints in the last six years, Health Canada is looking into possible dangers of BBQ Wire brushes.

Health Canada says that they've had 9 issues since 2011 regarding the products. Most of the incidents involve a wire bristle being accidentally eaten after being lodged in food that was cooked after the grill was cleaned.

Tyler Goodier with Health Canada's Consumer Product Safety Department says they're continuing to investigate.

"We'll try to figure out, is this something that's related to a particular type of brush, is it something about the wire diameters, something about the way the wires are stuck to the plastic. Or is this just something that happens to every brush as it gets old and undergoes some wear and tear."

One store that we spoke to in Airdrie says they've had no complaints, and that the sudden "epidemic" surrounding the wire brushes doesn't make sense.

Regardless, Health Canada has heard some concerns but will have no further updates until they finish the investigation.

"Once we have that in hand we can decide what the best way to protect the public is. That could range anything from doing recalls...we could continue just doing some educational materials because this really has a lot more to do with how you care for your brush and your grill."

Health Canada currently has tips on Barbecue safety in general at their official website.
