Having grass fires in Rocky View County might seem inconceivable following the kind of winter we had but county fire crews have been called to half a dozen fires within the last few days.

That includes a grass fire north of Cochrane on Friday afternoon that came within a few hundred metres of some houses, according to Rocky View District Fire Chief Dan Huba.

The fire, just off of Highway 22, was described by Huba as medium-sized.  He says crews were able to get fire apparatus on it quite quickly and extinguish the blaze.

Huba explains that all the snow has now come off the grass, leaving it dead and dry and extremely flammable.

While many parts of Alberta are dealing with flooding, others have put fire bans or advisories in place.  No fire warnings are in place locally but people are still being asked to be very careful.
