Very soon, Airdrie students will have another school to call their own after ground broke on the new facility in Hillcrest yesterday (March 1st).

The ceremony was attended by Trustees and staff with Rocky View Schools, Mayor Peter Brown and members of the Alberta Government including MLA Deborah Drever.

Chair of the Board of Trustees Todd Brand says he's excited that this new school is about to be built.

"It is a great feeling. We're so excited for what's going to develop here on this site. We can picture in our minds what the new school is going to look like. I'm excited to see what the school turns out to be in terms of its culture."

Brand says that the K-8 school is slated to be finished and opened by September of 2019, but they still need to determine which communities will use it.

"Hillcrest will be one, but we still have a process of determining the boundaries and that will happen probably about one year from this time. We'll sit down with the community and talk about which communities should be a part of this school. That'll be a process that we make sure we engage our community with."

With Airdrie's growing population it's expected more schools will be announced for the city and Brand is excited that Airdrie is getting noticed. He says when it comes to the Hillcrest school, it will mean so much to students, families and the neighbourhoods surrounding it.

"I think it's so great that we have all these new communities, they get these great new schools. Really, the school's going to become a centre of the community, not just for education but just a community hub where lots of community activities take place."
