On November 25, the Alberta Government is cracking down on selling energy products door-to-door.

As of January 1, 2017, companies can no longer sell products such as furnaces, hot water tanks, air conditioners and windows as well as contracts for natural gas and electricity at someone's door step.

This decision goes along with Premier Notley's announcement of capping electricity prices as part of the government's plan to protect Albertas' families.

Stephanie McLean, Minister of Service Alberta, says many people feel pressured into buying products and getting into contracts they don't need or have the time to shop around.

"Many are pressured into entering into contracts or buying products at their door that they don't want or frankly they didn't have time to research or look into or whether or not they are getting a good deal when some one is at their door."

Since 2010 there have been more than 1000 complaints about door to door energy sales.

McLean says there have been complaints of some companies misrepresenting, not canceling contracts upon request, and out right lying to get a home owner to comply.

"Our investigators have heard it all, where sales people at the door have said any furnace installed prior to 2010 is banned by code. They are not. Other lines say is that Albertans maybe emitting carbon monoxide to create a sense of fear in home owners in order to pressure them and take control and force their way into your home without permission."

The Alberta Government encouraging home owners to do their research before making their energy choices and to contact Alberta's Utility Consumer Advocate to help them make informed choices.
