Participants came out in the sunshine for the 11th Annual Mayor's Recreation for Life Run and Walk at the Ed Eggerer Athletic Park in Airdrie.

Race organizer Jodie Matsuba-Szucs was pleased with the turnout of both participants and race volunteers.  "I'm very pleased with what went on today, except for the part where I didn't get any sleep this morning 'cause it was grad as well.  It was really tough with your kid graduating to do grad and mayor's run.  Overall, the number of people, it's hard to say exactly what our number were, but I'm going to guess 250.  250 amongst all the events."

The day included a run within a run.  Matsuba-Szucs explained that they also host the Clarke Family Run for Pulmonary Fibrosis which is a separate part of the day.  "We just named that event specifically after that family because they're trying to raise some funds of their own so people had the opportunity to collect pledges just for that.  For the Clarke Family race any of the money they made is just for them."

Matsuba-Szucs says the volunteer support this year was phenomenal.  "I think this year we probably had the most volunteers.  Usually you're scrambly trying to find extra volunteers.  In our club, the Airdrie Aces Athletic Club, I do not let people off the hook, it's like you have to come.  If you're not racing you have to volunteer.  People just came out, there was somebody from every family of every athlete in our club, plus lots of people from the community that show up year after year."

Proceeds from the other races went to the Airdrie Aces Athletic Club, Free For All Fridays Youth Program and Airdrie Special Olympics.
