If you're planning a trip this week to the mountains, you couldn't have picked a better time.

National Wildlife Week was created to celebrate Canada's heritage and to advocate for conservation in our country.

The mountains are the perfect place to celebrate the wildlife.

Anne-Marie Syslak, Executive Director of Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society said that there are many different animals roaming around at this time of year.

"In the mountains you can see a whole array of animals. You can see deer, elk, big horned sheep, bears, cougars, wolves."

Being prepared, knowing where you're going, traveling in groups, checking trail reports, and being loud are some of the helpful tips that Syslak advises.

Syslak said that the worst thing you can do is surprise an animal.

"If you're loud you really shouldn't see a lot of animals, it keeps them safer and us safer to let them know we're in the area."
