Good news if you use the Aquatic Centre at Genesis Place; The lane pool will be open soon.

The pool was closed for most of July as work was done to meet new safety requirements. Once that work was done, the pool remained closed after staff noticed a problem with the paint on the pool's basin, which hadn't cured properly.

Brook Swanson, Customer Service Team Leader at Genesis Place, said spot repairs to the paint has now finished.

"The surface was prepped and repainted, so we really had to be specific on that cure time. They say it was about seven days for the paint to cure, so that's what we did in that specific space."

Swanson told us that they had begun filling the pool yesterday (August 17). Once the pool is filled, it needs to be treated and heated.

"On Monday, we're looking at sending a water sample to Alberta Health Services to ensure that everything's chemically balanced and good to go."

Once they get the thumbs up from AHS, the pool can reopen.

The issue with the lane pool paint has not impacted other planned closures in the Aquatic Centre as drains are replaced to meet safety requirements. That work is still on track.

"At this point, nothing else has come up in the sense of taking it off schedule for our end date. Our end date is still clear, that's what we're going for, that's the projection and we don't anticipate that it'll be extended."
