Fog and icy road conditions are believed to have played a part in a fatal collision this afternoon (January 16) on Highway 2A south of Carstairs.

At around 1:04 pm, Olds and Didsbury RCMP were dispatched to the collision which involved a grain truck and a pickup.  The grain truck was travelling southbound on Highway 2A when it appears to have lost control and collided with the pickup which was northbound.

The pickup driver was declared deceased at the scene and the driver of the grain truck was taken by ground ambulance to hospital.

RCMP and emergency services are still at the scene and an RCMP collision analyst is conducting an investigation.  Both north and southbound traffic is being diverted on Highway 2A at Highway 580 to the north and Township Road 294 to the south.

The diversion is expected to remain in place for several hours and RCMP are recommending motorists avoid the area.
