Winter means flu season in Airdrie, but their are steps that can be taken to minimize your risk of illness.

Dr. Judy MacDonald,  Medical Officer of Health with Alberta Health Services, says following a few tips can help keep yourself and others healthy over the holidays:

  • Get an influenza immunization from a pharmacist, public health clinic, or your physician
  • Avoid touching your face because you touch many surfaces throughout the day that may be contaminated with influenza
  • Wash hands frequently or use alcohol hand rub to sanitize them
  • Stay home if you get the flu so that you don't infect others

MacDonald also has some advice on how to overcome the flu quickly if you do come down with it.

"If you do happen to come down with influenza, you need to stay home and look after yourself, so rest and fluids. If you happen to be getting worse and your cough gets worse, you may want to seek medical assessment."
