A new pedestrian crossing sign outside of Safeway is catching eyes.

The sign is lined with flashing white lights. Ralph Huizinga with First Capital Realty says the sign is strictly precautionary.

"Our property manager, Kari Berekoff, noticed that, particularly at night, that pedestrian access out of the Safeway and into the parking lot is a bit obscured," said Huizinga.

In light of this observation, Berekoff requested the flashing sign be installed to alert drivers to the presence of pedestrians.

"The flashing bright white lights that wrap around that sign are attention-grabbers," said Huizinga, "And they do tend to focus driver attention to the fact that they're about to cross a pedestrian crossing and that they need to pay some additional attention."

This is the first of this type of sign installed by First Capital Realty in the city, but they are being used by the company nation-wide.
