Even though December 3 was National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day, a number of charges were laid down in relation to driving under the influence.

Cochrane RCMP, Sergeant David Hardy, with the Integrated Traffic Unit, says they had lots of extra resources out in and around the Cochrane area, and the message is not being heard.

"We stopped about 1000 cars and there was some enforcement action conducted. There was two 24 hour suspensions issued for drugs, we issued four IRS suspensions, which is a 3 day license suspension followed by a 3 day vehicle seizure, there was also one- GDL liquor suspension issued out."

Suspensions are bad enough, says Hardy, but the evening also resulted in apprehending two impaired drivers off the street.

"Unfortunately there was also two impaired drivers apprehended and charged criminally."

Hardy says they always hope to see no charges being laid, especially not ones with high recordings like the two suspects charged on the weekend.

"Really, you need to plan ahead if you're drinking or using drugs and find alternatives to driving. We're going to be continuing our checkstop campaign through the month of December, so if you are operating a motor vehicle there is a good chance you will be coming through a checkstop; so use some common sense and don't drink and drive."
