The Airdrie Fire Department is launching its Home Safety Campaign for the month of April.

Firefighters will be going door to door in areas of Airdrie, providing important fire and life safety information.

Fire crews will also be checking and even installing smoke alarms. They will also be installing Carbon Monoxide detectors where needed, which have been provided through a partnership with ATCO Gas.

“Smoke alarms themselves have a life expectancy of 10 years, carbon monoxide detectors have a life expectancy of seven years,” said Deputy Fire Chief Garth Rabel. “So as by manufacturers recommendation they should be replaced, tested regularly and then replaced when they’ve gone their life cycle.”

It’s all in an effort to make sure people are prepared in case of an emergency.

Rabel said people should have an escape plan in place for themselves and their family.

“Fire can double in size in about 45 to 60 seconds, which means you have about three minutes to make every important decision that you need to make in order to get you and your family out safely,” Rabel explained.

Between April 15th and May 15th, residents in the communities of Silver Creek, Thorburn and Prairie Springs, can expect a knock on their door from firefighters.
