Yesterday (August 2) around 11:30am, Airdrie fire crews responded to a blaze on Canals Close.

"When fire crews arrived, they found that there was light smoke showing in the area and they made their way to the residence," said Deputy Chief Garth Rabel. "At the back, they determined that an attached deck had been on fire and the fire had breached into the interior of the home as well."

When crews arrived, the lone resident of the home was waiting for the firefighters in front of the home and directed them to the back where the fire was. Rabel explained that crews got to work controlling the blaze on the back deck, then moved into the house to double check no one else was inside. The crews opened up some of the floors, walls and downstairs ceiling and controlled the blaze.

"We did have one firefighter with minor injuires unfortunately, with a minor hand injury which had to be treated. Other than that, there were no other injuries to report. Damage estimates are about $150,000 to the structure and content at this time."

After the fire was controlled, the Fire Prevention Bureau conducted an investigation to determine the cause.

"They determined that this fire unfortunately was caused by careless disposal of smoking material, meaning that we still have issues out there with people discarding cigarettes, not being responsible to ensure that they are completely out when they do discard them, and that's what occured in this case."
