While Airdrie has dropped to temperatures well below zero, water features aren't quite safe to skate on yet.

Deputy Fire Chief Garth Rabel warns that the ice poses a real danger.

"There's a lot of wonderful water features within our municipality, within our city for sure, but in no way are any of those ice surfaces safe."

Rabel suggests using what the department calls 'artificial ice surfaces' to better enjoy safety and recreation. Though some features may have frozen over, Rabel says the ice isn't thick enough to support the weight of a human or animal.

"We just need people right now to be staying away from those waterways and those uncertain ice conditions."
