Unusual circumstances sometimes call for unusual measures.

A fire advisory being put in place late in October is not something that happens often but it's exactly what's happened for Airdrie.

Effective at 3:00 pm on Friday (October 20) the Airdrie Fire Department has issued a Fire Advisory for the City of Airdrie.

The move comes after a grass fire earlier this week forced the evacuation of the Sharp Hill area and completely destroyed one family's home, killing two of their pets.  The fire spread quickly when it was fanned by strong winds.

Fire investigators have determined the fire was caused by a cigarette being improperly disposed of, being thrown out of the window of a vehicle.

The fire advisory means permit burning within the municipal limits of the City of Airdrie is banned due to dry / windy conditions.  All outstanding burning permits are suspended until further notice.

The advisory will remain in effect until the Fire Chief's Office deems it appropriate.

Under this Fire Advisory residents are allowed:

  • Internal household fire places
  • Incinerators (for farm and acreage use)
  • Regulated burning barrels
  • Camp stoves
  • Solid fuel barbeques (charcoal briquettes)
  • Liquid fuel barbeques (propane and natural gas)
  • Recreational camp fires (approved burn pit 24" in diameter or less)
  • Chimeneas
  • Fires contained within approved facilities and appliances in designated camping and recreational areas

Airdrie residents are reminded that when you're enjoying a leisure activity, such as a back yard barbeque or approved fire pit, to remember to be responsible, diligent and safe.
