The latest update on the incident.

At approximately 1 a.m., a pickup truck and semi-truck collided and both caught fire. The driver of the pickup was pronounced dead on the scene and the two occupants of the semi suffered minor injuries. Airdrie firefighters arrived on scene to extinguish the fire. Shortly after 8 a.m., the northbound QE2 lanes were reopened to traffic.

"I heard lots of honking and long bursts from a semi," says local resident Megan Enns. "I live on Edmonton Trail so it was quite loud. When I saw out my window this morning, it looked like the semi is partially in the ditch and the side road was very backed-up."

No names have been released as next of kin are being notified. The investigation is ongoing.

Original Story:

A fatal collision occurred on the QE2 early this morning in Airdrie (March 7).

Due to the severity of the collision, northbound traffic from East Lake Boulevard to Veterans Boulevard has been rerouted until further notice. A detour is in place for those traveling northbound. Drivers can take the East Lake Crescent exit, then exit onto East Lake Boulevard, then onto 567 to get around the collision.
