“Calgary Police Service HAWKS was following a stolen vehicle out of Calgary. They believed the occupant and driver of the vehicle to be known to Police and somebody that is quite prevalent in the vehicle theft area of crime.”

The driver of the stolen Dodge Ram truck was eventually stopped at the Cross Iron Mills parking lot and arrested without incident.

However, once Police searched the vehicle, they made a startling discovery.

“It was determined that it was a smoke type canister, still the potential for explosion and possibility of being dangerous to the public," says Martin, "It was quickly diffused and disposed of by the RCMP EDU (Explosives Disposal Unit).”

Thankfully, the police presence and the disposal of the device didn’t hinder activity at the mall.

“The mall itself remained open. The vehicle was obviously parked for a decent amount of time. RCMP set up a perimeter around that vehicle in the parking lot to make sure nobody got too close to the vehicle. The mall just continued on, business as usual.”

As a result of the chase and arrest, 29-year-old Justin Gordon Denison has been charged with multiple offences including:

·         Possession of stolen property over $5000 – 2 counts

·         Possession of stolen property under $5000

·         Driving while suspended

·         Mischief to property

·         Breach of Recognizance – 2 counts

·         Possession of break and enter tools

·         Driving an uninsured motor vehicle

·         Failing to comply with a court order – 2 counts
