The Airdrie Fire Department responded to reports of an explosion occurring on Monday, July 18.

At 11:28 p.m. fire crews arrived to find two explosions had occurred in a detached garage located at the rear of a residence on Springwood Crescent SE.

The blasts had blown the overhead door from its tracks and caused significant structural damage to the east and west walls of the building.

A male occupant of the residence was found inside the structure attempting to extinguish numerous small fires with a garden hose. He was quickly evacuated and assessed by Alberta Health Services.

His injuries were deemed to be minor and was not transported to hospital.

Firefighters entered the structure to extinguish remaining flames before starting the overhaul of the walls and ceilings.

The cause of the explosions and final damage estimates remain under investigation by the Fire Prevention Bureau.

A total of 13 firefighters and 4 apparatus were used in response to the incident.
