The Family Day long weekend is coming up, and you might be hoping for warm weather.

Dan Kulak, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, said it likely won't warm up in Airdrie.

"We are expecting temperatures on the long weekend to be approximately ten degrees below the long-term averages, so basically highs in around that -11 through -14 range for Saturday, Sunday, Monday."

That cold weather is expected to linger, with seven-day forecasts showing it hanging around until at least the middle of next week.

If you plan to head to the mountains, you might find favourable conditions for snowboarding and skiing.

"Certainly there has been a lot of snow in the southwestern part of Alberta these past few weeks here, just one storm system after another after another going through that general area. The overall accumulations are probably quite significant, and we're just kind of hearing that the ski hill operators seem to be happy with this."

Kulak said there are chances that more winter storms could blow through the mountains, bringing snow with them. The main thing according to Kulak is to stay bundled up, keep an eye on the forecast, and drive safely if you're travelling.

"Be prepared for winter travelling conditions. If not snow here, certainly the cold weather and as you get into the mountains, depending on your location if you're heading that way, do understand that there's a possibility on the slopes of another winter storm system moving in on the weekend."
