A revitalization project at the cenotaph will proceed thanks to a partnership between the Town of Cochrane and local community businesses and organizations.

David Usherwood, First Vice President of the Cochrane Legion, says they have banked $75,000 for the project thus far. The total price tag is estimated to be roughly $120,000 and Usherwood believes the community will rally around the cenotaph enhancement, which will include a bronze World War 1 soldier created by Studio West Bronze Foundry.

The goal is to complete the project this year to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge as well as Canada's 150th anniversary. Usherwood also hopes the Cenotaph will become a landmark for the town of Cochrane.

"A little story recounted to me was a couple of Legion members encountered two teenage boys who thought it was just a park and they were sitting on the steps of the cenotaph having lunch. They had no idea of the significance and were somewhat embarrassed for not recognizing the cenotaph."

In order for plans to proceed, a significant concrete base will need to be poured and cured before mounting the statue. If money allows, additional landscaping and improvements to the park will also be carried out. Funds will need to be raised no later than early July or the project could be delayed.

"The very worst scenario would be we don't have the money and we can't put  the bronze in place until next year. We can only do it if we have the money in the bank to allow us to go forward."

Usherwood is confidant that citizens and businesses will support the revitalization. If you can contribute to the community enhancement, stop in at the Cochrane Legion or call 403-932-2011.
