2018 is drawing to a close so it only seems fitting that a lot of people will want to end the year with a blast, or perhaps a series of them.

Once again this year the New Year's Eve celebrations in Airdrie will kick off with the annual fireworks display behind Genesis Place in Ed Eggerer Athletic Park.

Lynn Kehoe, Chair of the Airdrie Parades and Fireworks Committee, lines up the night.

"So New Year's Eve at 6:30 pm we'll have our fireworks display.  It'll be 10 minutes this year.  We have all of the good people from Good Life Fitness handing out free hot chocolate for people attending.  Of course, we'll have some music playing through the speakers and then watch the fireworks display and bring in the new year."

Kehoe says the early start to the event is to accommodate families with young children.

Fireworks are not an inexpensive thing to put on.  Kehoe says the display costs $1,000 per minute or $10,000 in total.  The City of Airdrie has stepped up to the plate to pay for the two fireworks displays this year in the city.

"The City of Airdrie has generously paid for all the fireworks, Canada Day and New Year's this year.  It's wonderful that they cover it all for us," says Kehoe.

Parking at the location is limited so the committee is suggesting you either carpool or consider taking public transit.  Kehoe says if you do drive to the event you can park at the Scout Hall or at Genesis Place, but she recommends doing it on the Bert Church side.

And one more thing.  The event is outdoors and, although the actual fireworks display lasts just 10 minutes, you'll likely be standing outside for some time, so make sure you dress properly for the weather.
