While often a joyous occasion, the holidays can be a tough time for many.

Darcy Jessen with Alberta Health Services says a number of factors contribute to mental health struggles around Christmas.

"I would say it's a sense of loneliness or the stress of the holidays. Having high expectations about what the holidays might look like, and then being disappointed if they don't turn out to be that way."

According to Jessen, a number of resources are available for residents of Airdrie struggling with seasonal depression or suicidal thoughts. The Urgent Care Centre, Addiction & Mental Health Clinic, and Community Links all provide a variety of walk-in times at their clinics.

Those struggling with seasonal depression or suicidal thoughts can also call AHS's confidential mental health hotline at 1-877-303-2642,  or phone the Addicition & Mental Health Clinic's intake line at 1-877-652-4700 to set up an appointment.

Jessen hopes people struggling over the holidays will reach out and get the help they need.

"I would encourage them to reach out to neighbours or their community in some way, maybe family, friends, church, even professional resources because their are people here to support them."
