Earlier in February, an Airdrie man was charged for making a false 911 call.

Cst. Jennifer Weedmark with the Airdrie RCMP says that 911 calls are high priority, and every call has to be investigated to ensure the person on the other end is in fact safe. False 911 calls make the system more difficult.

"The main focus is that we don't want to abuse the 911 system, mainly because when you're calling 911, it's tying up the system. It's going to tie up the phone lines."

Because every call has to be investigated, Weedmark says frivolous 911 calls can prevent first responders from attending to people that are actually in an emergency.
