Idle, unattended vehicles are easy targets for theft, especially during the cold winter months.

Airdrie RCMP are reminding the public that it is important to not leaving your running vehicle unattended as there have already been many thefts in Airdrie this season. Car thieves look for opportunities such as keys left in the ignition while warming up.

Cpl. Gina Slaney of the Airdrie RCMP says that the past few months have seen the crime in high volume.

"In November, we had a total of 20 car, truck, and SUV thefts, and so far in the first five days of December, we've already had 4. So it looks like that number might increase."

There are a few preventative measures that every vehicle owner should be taking to avoid facing a costly consequence.

"Make sure your garage door opener for your house is not left in your vehicle and make sure there are no personal items of any value in plain view," warns Slaney.

In addition to these two tips, vehicle owners should not leave their vehicles running unattended and if they must, ensure it is locked properly. If you do see any suspicious activity in your neighbourhood, it is imperative to report it right away.
