Airdrie resident Vicki Hilliard had some concerns on Sunday, December 11th.

With her house backing onto Nose Creek Park, she saw some kids playing on what she thought to be thin ice near a bridge.

"The ice right there doesn't actually get very thick," said Hilliard, "cause the bridge is there and the water is moving".

She went out to see if anyone had checked the thickness of the ice, and found that they hadn't.

"I tried to explain ice safety to them, and they just were not having it."

Cold weather will see many venture out on the ice, but is it safe to do so?

If you plan on heading out, keep in mind that the ice should be at least 10 to 12 inches thick. Clear blue ice is the strongest, you shouldn't skate on grey ice.
