Posts have been spreading across social media recently telling voters they must pre-register to vote or they won’t be allowed to cast a ballot.

Elections Alberta said while you must be on the List of Electors in order to vote, you can do that on election day at the polling station, you’re not required to register in advance.

“Electors must be on the voters list before they can vote on election day but they can do that at the polls on election day if they haven’t registered in advance,” explained deputy chief electoral officer Drew Westwater.

If you don’t pre-register you must make sure to have proper identification with you on election day.

“They have to bring two pieces of ID with them, both with their name on it and one with their address on it,” said Westwater. “They fill out a declaration form at the polls, we would add them to the voters list, they would get their ballot and vote like everyone else. It would just take a little bit longer.”

Westwater says pre-registering can save you time at the polling station and is easy to do.

“You can do it online as long as you have a drivers license or an Alberta ID card,” he said.

He adds that if you’ve moved in the last year it may also be a good idea to update your information ahead of time through the Elections Alberta website.
