Spring has sprung and with that comes more wildlife making their way onto major roadways.

In the event you encounter large wildlife and a collision occurs, Airdrie RCMP said there are a couple things you need to do.

"If you have over $2000 damage to your vehicle or a combination of that if there is a two vehicle collision and there is that much damage, it needs to be reported to the police within 24 hours," said Cpl. Curtis Peters.

Peters said the best case scenario is if the animal is already off to the side of the road and has succumbed to it's injuries then you would not be required to call the police at that time. Once you are able, you would need to report the accident to the Airdrie RCMP detachment.

If the animal is still alive or blocking traffic and could cause an additional accident, you need to contact the RCMP who would work with Wildlife Services to move the animal.

Peters said that in most cases RCMP do not attend vehicle collisions with wildlife unless an individual is injured or there is something blocking traffic.
