Shortly after 7 pm on Friday, June 17, crews from the Rocky View County Fire Station were called out to a fire in Bearspaw.

A home on Hillside Terrace was completely engulfed in flames after a fire broke out in the homes attached garage.

Gary Barnett, Bearspaw District Fire Chief, said that upon arrival crews had to take a defensive approach to subdue the flames.

"We turned up on scene possibly 20 minutes into the fire, we were going to be defensive at that point, there was no way we were going to be able to make any entry into the home."

Barnett said crews worked from 7:30 pm until approximately 4 am Saturday, when investigators took over the scene.

Due to the heat and the wind, the fire did spread across the property causing minor damage to an adjacent home.

Teams took an offensive approach to the neighbouring property, said Barnett, using five separate lines to fight the fire, as well as entering the home to battle the fire internally.

Each of the occupants from both homes escaped without injury.

"I believe there were two people at home that were alerted to the fire, they both escaped unharmed, same with the neighbors. We did actually go into the home to the side and rescue a cat."

Barnett said that the cause of the fire has still not been identified but investigators will continue to do their work and file their report later this week.
