With less than two weeks to go until the big day, the need for volunteers to help with Airdrie's Canada Day festivities has grown to a state of desperation.

The Chair of the Volunteer Sub-Committee of the Airdrie Parades and Fireworks Committee, Dave Maffitt sent out an urgent appeal for volunteers on the weekend. In it, Maffitt said they're looking to recruit 60 to 70 volunteers to help with Canada Day.

According to Maffitt, volunteer teams of two or more people are needed to stand by the 27 barricades blocking the cross streets for safety reasons. The bonus, Maffitt said, is you get a front row seat for the parade.

The afternoon Family Fun Festival has expanded for Canada's 150th birthday this year and volunteers are needed in a variety of locations to help out with the planned entertainment.

Volunteers are also required to help out with the bigger and better fireworks display that will wrap up Canada Day at dusk.

Maffitt said that volunteering is a great family or corporate team building opportunity.

If you're interested in helping out for a couple of hours you can go here to check out the opportunities and shift schedule.
