An expansion to Deerfoot Trail in Calgary has Airdrie commuters excited about the relief from traffic congestion.

21 kilometres of Deerfoot Trail between Beddington Trail and Anderson/Bow Bottom Trail will be expanded, adding lanes to both the northbound and southbound sides of the highway. $478 million has been put aside in the Capital Plan for the project and the expansion is expected to create 2,330 jobs.

One man says that he hopes to grab some much-needed sleep due to less congestion on the expanded highway.

"I'm pretty excited. I actually work pretty early mornings so it's going to be good for less traffic and hopefully I'll be able to sleep in a little more."

Another man hopes the highway is expanded as quickly as possible to make his commute to work easier and quicker.

"Well, I hope it's done quickly because I run into the traffic jam every morning from Beddington all the way down to Glenmore Trail."

A woman says she's hopeful as far as traffic relief, but the possible construction makes her wary.

"I'm hoping it would cut down on traffic but time will tell. The interruption with the flow, while they're constructing, is a concern."

Another man voices a concern with the cost of the expansion.

"I think it will help us get around pretty smoothly. It's going to help with traffic flow. It might be a little (hard on) taxpayers pockets, but I think it's a good idea."

One woman, who works deep in south Calgary is very excited about the expansion making her commute much easier.

"(For) myself, personally, I am pretty excited about it because I drive that road fairly often. I work in south Calgary and I think it is needed considering rush hour gets pretty crazy."

Another man says that the Deerfoot has always needed expansion and says that he's glad to finally see one being done.

"I think it's going to be really great because Deerfoot right now is not the best place to drive on so I'm very excited for it."
