If you have checked your calendar, or looked at your phone, or done what you normally do to establish what date it is, you will know that it is September 9th today.

That means we have 13 more days of summer until fall officially arrives on September 22nd.  Someone really needs to tell that to mother nature, or at least to the people at Environment Canada.

After the very pleasant day on Friday and the not bad one yesterday, things have taken a turn for the cooler today that will last throughout the entirety of the week ahead, according to Blaine Lowry, Meteorologist with Environment Canada.

"We had a nice ridge of high pressure at the end of the work week here and temperatures were a bit warmer but as we get into the next week there's going to be a series of low-pressure systems and cold fronts that move through that are going to act to drop the temperature."

The normal high for this time of year is 18.  Lowry says today's high won't be far off that mark at around 13 but, after that, it will drop steadily to a high of only 10 for Wednesday, then 7 on Thursday and 9 for Friday.

But, Lowry has more bad news for us, and maybe a precursor of things to come.  He actually used the "S" word, although he says we shouldn't worry about a lot for the Airdrie area.

"In the area, yes.  I think particularly along the foothills as we get into Wednesday and Thursday there will definitely be the chance of snow.  For areas a little further east, Airdrie itself and the QE II, there's still that chance.  Accumulations will likely be little to none in that area but there's definitely the chance as we go into Wednesday night into Thursday of seeing some."

Lowry says the foothills around Sundre could see several centimetres of snow accumulating.

If you're hoping for an old-fashioned Indian Summer, Lowry says he's not promising anything, but conditions are expected to turn around a bit near the end of the week.

"It's tough to say when we may get into those conditions (Indian Summer).  For next weekend, it does look like once that cold front passes through on Thursday, we get into more clearing skies and seasonal highs again, so that's what we can say for now."
