Crews responded to a gas leak near East Lake Rise earlier this afternoon (May 11).

According to Airdrie Fire Chief Kevin Weinberger, contractors struck a gas line in the area. Four buildings were quickly evacuated.

ATCO arrived on site to tend to the problem, and are monitoring air in the area as well. Emergency crews are also on site, and one lane of East Lake Boulevard is closed.

There is a smell in the air but Weinberger said there is no threat to public safety. Even so, residents are asked to avoid the area for the time being.

Weinberger expects the situation to be resolved within the hour.
